I found this old typewriter in an antique store and was immediately attracted to the graphic patterns of the keys and actuation mechanisms. I wondered about the history of the typewriter, who used it, and what was written on it. Were they imaginative stories, love letters, exploration of history, inspiring new ideas or perhaps reflections of philosophy and the meaning of life.
It made me think about how astounding it is that everything that has been written in the English language is simply a unique combination of a mere twenty-six symbols with a few punctuation marks tossed in. A well-chosen combination of keystrokes can inspire a world of beauty and wonder, truth and enlightenment, propaganda and delusion, manipulation and fear, optimism and hope.
How many times have I sat at a keyboard searching for the right combination of keys that could most effectively convey the thought I hoped to share, or the vision I wanted to let loose in the world? Sometimes the keys seemed to taunt me with their limitless possibilities and evasive secrets.
Thousands of words might have little impact, or a scant few words can change the world.
Choose wisely.
