Folding Space ~ 2020-2021

Folding Space (2020-2021)

Revisiting a subject I was attracted to when I was a teen, reinvigorated my inspiration to go out with my camera to explore, to continue to try new ICM moves, and to simply PLAY. I found that I am still as excited and intrigued to see the abstract images I am able to capture with this technique. After spending hours wandering around the city creating this style of image, I can feel like I have been exploring another realm of space and time.

The Science Fiction Influences on my ICM Photography

I have always been attracted to the look of science fiction imagery and find that sci-fi themes, designs, textures, and colours often find their way into my ICM work. Fifty years after making my “Electric Emanations” series, I felt inspired to use the same techniques to create a series of new images based on the theme of “Folding Space.” In this series, I used the concept put forth in Frank Herbert’s “Dune” novels that one could travel great distances in a short amount of time by ‘folding space, jumping from one point in the universe to another.

I like to imagine how space might appear to the navigator as they travel through the layers and bends of folded space and time. The journey could appear chaotic and frightening, and at the same time electric and beautiful, as they watch the fantastic colours, forms, and bursts of energy that appear as they travel from one space-time dimension to another. Thinking about sci-fi themes sometimes helps me set an intention that serves as a guide to how I create the mood of an image.

Note: All the photographs in this series are single exposure ICM images with minimal tonal adjustments.
