The Metropolis Project
I often like to write short stories based on some of my images. In this series, the images inspired an imagined future of technological change and social transformation.
From the time I saw mv first science fiction movies, I have been enamoured with potential futures filled with amazing technological advances that contribute to the quality of life for humanity. The narrativethat emerged with this series was an imagination of what my city of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, might become as technological advances in architecture, living spaces, and a newfound ability to fabricate materials on demand shape our lives and culture. I imagined how new and undreamt-of technologies could evolve to provide better lives for everyone.
Portrait of a City Moving into the Future
While working on the Metropolis project, I developed a new approach to multi-image ICM photography to capture and share how I see the city in my mind’s eye – both as it is and how I imagine it might evolve. ICM helps me reveal the dimension, scale, forms, and textures of the city. This is a collection of portraits of the city as it exists, as it transforms, and as it could evolve into an amazing place to live through the use of ground-breaking technology. Each photograph represents a passage from an imaginary novel about a future that someday might become reality. The images that emerged capture a bit of the visual tapestry of cultures, architecture, reflections, and patterns of Vancouver.
NOTE: This is only a selection of images from “Metropolis”. You can see the entire series and story in the June 2022 issue of ICM Photography Magazine.
